The Value of a Dream

Edward lingered at the edge of the food tent. His classmates were celebrating their graduation from high school. Chatter and laughter filled the tent, but Edward was not engaged in the merriment.

I sought him out. So, what are your plans now that high school is behind you?

I listened for a half hour while Edward shared his knowledge about electronics. The excitement in his voice was inspiring. It didn’t matter to him that he did not fit in with his classmates.

When I had to leave I thanked him for teaching me about an otherwise mystifying subject. As he shook my hand he said I want to thank you for being interested in my dream. You are the first adult with whom I have shared it. I have never talked to an adult this long.

In the years since my encounter with my friend, Edward, I have pictured him as a professor in a university. He is saying to his students I remember that old guy who listened to my first lecture.
