The Wonderfully Simple Gospel

In Matthew chapter 23 Jesus takes on the religious hucksters of His day. They were packaging their religion in a bundle of rules and loading people down like so many pack animals. (See The Message by Peterson)

Jesus met their false religion by inviting people to take His easy yoke and enjoy His peace. He summarized true religion as feeding the hungry, clothing the cold, visiting the sick, and providing shelter for the homeless. He lifted the burdens instead of loading people down.

My friend and mentor, H.M.S. Richards, told me that the gospel is simply wonderful and wonderfully simple. He studied the life of John Wesley who reduced his dozens of doctrines to two as his life was nearing an end. Wesley’s two beliefs were I am a great sinner and Jesus is a great Savior.

My degree in theology required a comprehensive exam. My examiners asked many questions to which I gave the right answers. Since that day I have found few of their issues helpful to those who hurt. Lifting the downtrodden compassionately is the religion of Jesus. I have not mastered His method, but it is my goal nevertheless.
