Looking for the Good in Hoar Frost!

All four of my boys, my husband and three sons, know a lot of things. They know a lot of normal things and a lot of abnormal things. Often, they will spout out a fact or a statement and I really want to call “bologna” on it, but then I remember it’s 79/21% chance they are correct. (Annoying!) Now, I just quietly fact check with Mr. Google before I doubt them.

Recently we had a little getaway to Mount Magazine State Park. It had snowed here in Northwest Arkansas, but at Mt. Magazine there was something a little different and really quite special. All the trees, bushes, grasses, and brush were covered in soft white crystals of frozen water. I had heard the term before and Googled to make sure.

Hoar Frost.

Now that was a new one to the boys, but not to Tom. In fact, Tom knew manna had been compared to hoar frost. Interesting. The Israelites had seen this magical beautiful winter frost. So had David who spoke about it in Psalm 147.

There is a third mention of hoar frost in the Bible and it comes straight out of God’s mouth!

Job had gone right where he needed to go after seeing so much destruction and sadness. He went to God. And God answered him.

I’ve always loved the entire conversation. It has always fascinated me. “Out of who’s womb came the ice? And the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?” (Job 38:29 KJV). All of God’s questions leave us speechless and scratching our heads. Curious and amazed. Job comes to God with all his bad, and God gives him a roundabout assurance with His Good.

Tom and the boys know a lot, but they don’t know everything. Neither do I. But I do know this. Sometimes predictions are easy. And this one is 100% true. 2022 will have some bad — there is no doubt about that. But 2022 will have some good, too, and we will recognize it even more if our hearts are tuned to Him.

Happy New Year! Go see some creation, but don’t stop there. Look for the Creator in those stars, the Creator in that mountain — because even in the hoar frost, He is there.
