Cats, Dogs and a Savior!

There is a risk that often times can happen, that you the reader may not find this blog, at least the first part, as hilarious as I the writer does. I guess it depends on if you can relate. But no matter, here it is! 😀

There are three main characters in this scene.

Ben Krein. Our middle kid. Classic. Middle. Child. Doesn’t use a lot of words. Pretty emotionally stable. Never seemingly high or low, up or down. Not easily excitable. Feels loved the most when he’s being fed.

Whiskers the Cat. May he rest in peace. Now there are good cats and bad cats. Whiskers was a pretty bad, good cat. Ben was his favorite, although that may have been the Stockholm Syndrome talking, as little Ben would put young Whiskers in a legit headlock every night when we would tuck them into bed. Whiskers would just lie there, with only the tippy tip of his tail twitching. We worried for Ben’s eyeballs.

Marley the Dog. She’s part Dachshund weenie dog and Yorkie, so she is quite literally a Dork! Ben describes her as a “weird little dog.” I am her favorite, but she will eat any scary ankles messing with her family!

So these are the characters and here is the scene.

Ben is sitting on the couch. Whiskers or Marley is across the room on the chair. Ben calls ”Whiskers” or “Come here Marley.” They don’t move. They don’t look. They don’t care. Ben yells louder for them to come. They stand up, stretch, and curl back up, giving Ben their backsides.

Oh, it’s on!

Been escalates his calls. He calls them sweetly. Quietly. Loudly. Commandingly! He claps his hands. He claps his knees. He throws out kiss sounds. By this time the rest of us are spectators at this game and I have often said, “I will give you $5 if you can get that cat to come to you!”

Ben continues. He’s flopping all around. Begging. Pretending he’s eating something. In the end, sometimes I owe Ben $5, but sometimes he stalks off to the shower with an “I hate you Whiskers” or a “You’re so weird Marley!”

So just imagine my pure amusement and pleasure when I came across this meme! Ha ha ha ha ha ha! Perfection!

This morning the thought came to me that Jesus also calls us to him. Sometimes we’re already there by his side like a loyal dog. Sometimes he calls us once and we run to him like a good cat. But sometimes, He works hard at calling us back to Him. He never ceases! Like Ben changing his strategy, He calls us in whatever way it takes. Sometimes we picture him standing politely and quietly knocking at that front door, but maybe, sometimes, he looks a little more like this meme. Righteously reckless. Persistently pleading. Jealously wooing. Tenderly yelling. After all, he is the One who never leaves the one behind. Not even a bad cat like me.
