Portion!

Portion.

It’s an interesting word. I’ve been wanting to write something about this word for a while now. For some reason — and I don’t know why — it makes me think of eating Cream of Wheat when I was a little girl. I had a method to eat my portion of Cream of Wheat — but I won’t bore you with the details!

The word portion is used often in the Bible.

“Thou art my portion, oh Lord.” Psalms 119:57

“The Lord is my portion, saith my soul, therefore will I hope in him.” Lamentations 3:24

“My flesh and my heart faileth, but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:26

The dictionary defines portion as a piece, an amount, or a section. That may be why I think of Cream of Wheat, because my method was to quickly divide it into sections with my spoon before the sections ran back together — but I digress!

In the Bible, portion is the word “cheleq.” Meanings for this word include legacy, reward, or inheritance.

We all have heard about people getting an inheritance. It’s what they get. Their allotment. Their portion. The inheritance can be valuable or a bunch of junk. These Bible verses become much more meaningful and even mind blowing when we understand them to mean . . .

“The Lord is my reward.”

“The Lord is what I inherit!”

“The Lord is what I get!!”

We hit the value jackpot!  Seems way too good to be real!

But listen to this verse. It seems even more unreal!

“For the Lord’s portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.” Deuteronomy 32:9

WE are what the Lord gets? WE are His reward? Seems like God is getting the short end of the stick! He’s inheriting a mini-storage full of junk. But amazingly, that is not how He feels. He’s ecstatic! He’s over the moon!

His great love for us knows no limits. I may not understand it, but I am so grateful for it.

He is my portion and I am His.

I inherit Him and He inherits me.

I get Him and He gets me!

Portion. It’s more then an interesting word! It’s the Good News!
