Loving a ‘Little Cockroach’

I love Bean.

She was one of Rose’s puppies. Three went to friends at work and we kept one. We kept Bean.

I love that dog.

A cross between a Jack Russell terrier and an unknown, random Chihuahua, Bean has crazy, wiry hair. She is not the best looking dog by any stretch of the imagination. Yet to us, she is beautiful and sometimes even regal.

Since Bean has Chihuahua in her genes, she’s not the bravest dog either. If the boys even speak too harshly, she shakes. She sometimes even cowers. But that’s OK, she’s Bean. And I love her.

Bean isn’t even a very snuggly dog. Oh we snuggle! But usually not by her choosing. In fact, she’s the only dog we’ve ever had that prefers her own little doggy bed… away from our snuggles. But her aloofness is overlooked. I love Bean!

I think I love her so much, because Rose made her. And we were there at Bean’s beginning. It makes me think about God’s love for us.

It’s hard to fathom how the God of heaven and earth can love me. I’m not that beautiful. Not that nice. Not that brave. Not that lovable. Sometimes I don’t feel much like snuggling. Just leave me alone. Let me be at an arms length away.

The Bible is full of Beans.

Men and women doing it their way. Ugly behaviors. Ugly actions. Cowardly deeds. People who were content to be at a comfortable distance from Jesus.

But still he loved them. He loves me. But why? Why in the world?

Maybe it has something to do with Him making us. Creating us. He’s been there from the beginning. But still it remains, God’s love for us is unexplainable. Indescribable. Unknowable. Unbelievable. Unfathomable. Unsearchable.

If I can love a dog that we sometimes describe as a “little cockroach,” oh, how He can love you and me!
